digital marketing trends 2020 | IDCM

Digital Marketing is not something that is static. With evolving technologies year-on-year, the top digital marketing trends of last year may have gotten obsolete this year. And if experts are to be believed, 2020 will be like nothing we have seen before in the digital landscape. Add COVID-19 to the mix and there you have a complex playing field on the horizon.
All things considered, there are more than 3.48 billion social media users worldwide. That’s roughly 42% of the world’s population and 80% of internet users! So it’s open season for wise digital marketers to tap into the sweet sweet long term revenue for years to come.
Fortunately, with changing digital marketing trends, the psyche and expertise of digital marketers are changing as well. With the competition getting more cut-throat the people running the show are getting smarter as well.
So how to ride the wave of the brand new digital marketing trends of 2020 and leave the competition in the dust? Read on.
Spoiler: Who dares wins! The most successful marketers in 2020 will be brave and will be able to think out of the box. Even if they aren’t experts on everything ‘digital’, they will take risks, embrace new technologies, and continually use data to optimize results.

Streamlining Digital Presence

Building a successful business on ‘rented land’ has never been a safe bet. However, this hasn’t stopped sheepish marketers from putting all of their digital eggs in social baskets they don’t own such as Facebook and Instagram. Many of these marketers are now regretting such decisions. Streamlining a digital presence is critical in 2020. Customers need to easily find the business on-demand and get assured that it is indeed a safe bet to invest their hard-earned money on.
In short, digital marketers should bet on a home base that is a platform that they own and is not rented.

Video Marketing takes the spotlight

If the business isn’t already using video marketing, the marketers should get on board this year. Text-based content simply can’t compete with the power of video, especially when it comes to trying to sell products and services online.
82.2% of marketers say they will increase their investment in video in 2020. 49% say they will increase their brand’s presence on YouTube specifically.
Even Youtube, which has been off late thought of as a stagnating platform for content creators, has seen a 34.36% increase in engagement from 2018 to 2019. The shift toward more dynamic video content will continue.

Focussing on Visual Search

Many brands are already using visuals in all aspects of marketing, with search being one of them. Those who are yet to employ this should jump on this bandwagon soon.
Nowadays, images are returned for no less than 19% of search queries on Google. Also, 39% of buyers have been influenced by a significant image search (Search Engine Journal).
It’s time to get going with not only visually appealing social posts, videos, and blog posts – but to also have a look at visual search as well.
Google, Microsoft’s Bing and Pinterest for instance, are all getting into the visual search game big time. Both Google and Pinterest have their own Lens search capabilities that recognises objects and landmarks through a camera app.

Focussing on IoT Advertising

The Internet of things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
In addition to mobile devices and laptops – from smart cars to household appliances to wearable tech, the Internet of Things (IoT) is getting more and more connected. Thus it is imperative IoT is applied to digital marketing as well, precisely in advertising.
Google’s local search ads, for example, are already a widely used application of IoT in advertising, making it possible to target specific audiences within certain areas of a country or within a radius of a certain location. When people make local searches using their mobile devices, they’ll be subjected to relevant ads based on their current location. PPC advertisers can then target their ads to specific locations (usually their local store), and even optimize their ads by targeting keywords that illustrate user intent.

Long-Form Content

Short-form of content in 2020 is out-of-fashion so to say. It won’t get digital marketers far these days – neither with Google’s SEO algorithms or the target audience. Nowadays posts that are north of 3,000 words long tend to attract the most traffic, as they offer readers an in-depth exploration of the concerned topic(s). Long-form content allows content creators to establish themselves as an expert on a subject and gives them more scope for targeting keywords. Creativity is not bound by length restrictions here.
A study from Search Engine Journal indicates that long-form content gets 77% more backlinks than short articles, which is critical for driving organic traffic:
